This week I joined Patrick Comben AM, author, historian, and former state minister for Education and Environment and Heritage, at the unveiling of a plaque marking the location of the Edward Street Baptist Church in Brisbane. The church was built in 1866 right beside the earlier original temperance hall of the Moreton Bay settlement. The hall was subsequently replaced by a new Temperance Hall, the Canberra Hotel, and now a city office tower. The work of the Moreton Bay Temperance Society of 1849 is continued today 177 years after its foundation as the Drug Awareness & Relief Foundation (Australia) and its subsidiary @drug.arm. Please find a way to help reduce the harms of alcohol and other drugs across society, now assisting people build better lives for approaching two centuries. This month 167 years ago, 18 convicts in one colonial town had their tickets-of-leave cancelled in one amazing story. Please go to my website HistoryOutThere to read, hear, like and share their full tale, "Ipswich's Cancelled Convicts". At the website subscribe for free so that you get more of these stories delivered straight to your inbox for free. Mrs Preston suffered a gruesome death 165 years ago that helped establish a legend. Please go to my website www.historyoutthere.com to read, listen, like and share the story, "Putrid Death that Forged a Legend." The Great Cab Proprietors Strike of 1865 is often overlooked in terms of historic importance, but the cabbies strike foreshadowed law changes that occurred with the coming of Uber. Please go to my website www.historyoutthere.com to read, listen, like and share the story, "The Great Cab Strike of 1865." In colonial Queensland in the 19th century a stolen umbrella could have landed you in gaol. Please go to my website to read, hear and share the entire fascinating story, "The Umbrella Offender." 150 years ago George Frost continued to be tormented by his wife even after he died. Please go to my website to read, hear and share the entire fascinating story, "Tormented Beyond the Grave." I really enjoy receiving greetings from followers around the world, and particularly love today's video from the Muddy Creek Picker who's in Paris looking to make the biggest pick of his life, good luck! 😃 Go to the Cobb & Co Museum and discover a legend of the Australian Outback. Visit www.historyoutthere.com for the full story and videos of "The Real Treasure of Cobb & Co". I went to Toowoomba's Carnival of Flowers to see this, my 1900 Cobb & Co carriage that I sponsored through the Queensland Museum to help preserve.
