I've come to the Auckland War Memorial Museum to see the last Japanese Kamikaze Zero of the Second World War. In Rabaul this Zero was readied for a Kamikaze attack on Allied forces, but the ground crew delayed attaching the 250kg bomb, the war ended, and the last Kamikaze remained grounded, saving untold lives including that of the young pilot. This Anzac wasn’t awarded any bravery medals, but his is an amazing First World War story from Goondiwindi like no other. This week I ventured out to the Western Australian wheat belt to scramble to see the rock art tens of thousands of years old in Mulka’s Cave. The art was beautiful. In contrast, the dreamtime story was an awful warning of inbreeding, child murder and cannibalism.
