City people have been going to Darwin in the Northern Territory for 150 years for all sorts of reasons. Prior to heading out into the Timor Sea to my Tiwi Islands Hike for Health, I visited the Northern Territory’s Mary River which boasts the highest concentration of saltwater crocodiles in the world. It certainly delivered with crocodiles, water buffalo, and jabiru in abundance. Darwin in the Northern Territory is one of only 10 places in the world that you can see a Cold War era B52 bomber, and at almost 50 metres long, it’s absolutely enormous. You can even still see where the Cruise Missiles were attached. During the first bombing of Darwin on the 19th of February 1942, this Japanese Zero was shot down, its pilot captured by Tiwi Islander Mathias, and the wreckage is now here at the Darwin Aviation Museum. Camels were imported in greater numbers from the 1860s to assist with inland exploration, including the Burke & Wills expedition. Today Australia has the largest population of wild camels in the world, and in the Northern Territory I took a magical camel ride back through time as the sun set over the Timor Sea. Hard to beat when the Sun, Moon and Venus say goodnight together over the Timor Sea 🙂 On the 19th of February 1942, ten weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbour and four days after the fall of Singspore, the Japanese attack Australia and bomb Darwin for the first time. USS Peary is sunk for the US Navy's biggest loss of life in Australian waters. She goes down with guns blazing – this is one of those guns.
